Alberto Gonzales and Perjury

Apparently, Alberto Gonzales committed perjury. Can we please put the tyrant in jail? I just started reading The Dark Side and I’m pissed as hell. I want to make a goal of putting all of those directly responsible for torture and gutting the Constitution in jail, and I want to drive from power everyone who voted for the MCA. No quarter for tyrants.

    Shawn,

I started reading Mayer’s book last summer, and at first I couldn’t put it down. Then, seemingly because of work I had to read it discontinuously.

Then I stopped. Perhaps because I really didn’t need to read it to understand what had happened (to this country, and with its leaders). But maybe the real reason was that ultimately, and subconsciously I didn’t want to believe it. I still don’t, because doing so would collapse the various pillars of my faith in this country and culture.

And I’ve already been here for too long, have set down roots, have started nurturing a family. And I can’t just leave. But that’s what one would logically have to do, given that catastrophic loss of belief.

So, I stopped reading, about halfway through The Dark Side. I know I’ll still finish it, just to satisfy the academic in me. And what then? What to do about it? I remain at a loss, and that for me is a frightening state of being. Perhaps with a new Administration in place soon, things will look up, and for the better. But as you wrote, such a betterment — by necessity — must include bringing the perpetrators of that sordid business to account. To justice.
